Cermet Finishing End Mills
Cermet is a new type of material that combines ceramic elements(such as TiC, TiCN and Molybdenum Carbide) with metal binders(like nickel, and to a lesser extent molybdenum and cobalt). It not only maintains the high strength, high hardness, wear resistance, high temperature resistance, oxidation resistance and chemical stability of ceramics, but also has good metal toughness and plasticity. As a result, more and more users are using cermet finishing end mills to replace traditional carbon steel milling cutters for semi-finishing to finishing operations. Newer cermets have increased toughness that makes them comparable to some carbides, while their good impact resistance promotes good performance in some interrupted cuts.

Features of Cermet Finishing End Mills
High wear resistance
The high wear resistance of cermets is due in part to their high hot hardness, which is higher than most cemented carbides. Cermets also have low reactivity because they are more chemically inert than tungsten carbide. The low affinity to the workpiece means that edge build-up and pits are not as noticeable for cermets, as carbides are.
Bending strength
Flexural strength is determined by subjecting a sample of material to increasing loads until failure. The flexural strength of cermet milling cutters is comparable to that of cemented carbide and twice that of other materials. Therefore, the machining efficiency increases as the feed rate increases.

Thermal shock resistance
The use of coolant is not mandatory for cermet finishing end mills. However, coolant is typically applied for three reasons: cooling, lubrication, and chip evacuation. Due to its good wear resistance, weld resistance and high hot hardness, cermets provide an excellent surface finish even when dry-machined.
Based on the above characteristics, the cermet milling cutter is suitable for high-speed machining of steel parts, especially die steel, stainless steel, alloy steel and non-ferrous metals, with good wear resistance and low workpiece roughness.
